Opening up an apartment layout by removing walls is common, but mistaking a load-bearing wall for a partition is a critical risk. Every structural alteration requires a licensed engineer’s assessment, a statics project, and proper steel bracing before a single brick is removed.

### The Myth of the 10cm Wall

A dangerous misconception in older masonry buildings (common in Zagreb and Rijeka) is that a wall is only load-bearing if it is thick. In reality, even a 10cm thick wall can provide vital lateral stiffness (shear strength) to the entire building structure during an earthquake. Never rely on sound or thickness to judge a wall’s structural role.

### The Mandatory Statics Project

Before any demolition begins, you must hire an authorized structural engineer (ovlašteni inženjer građevinarstva). They will assess the building's existing condition, calculate the loads, and issue a formal structural project (statički elaborat). This document is your legal and technical protection, specifying exactly which walls can be altered and what temporary and permanent supports are required.

### Temporary Propping and Sequencing

A load-bearing wall cannot simply be knocked down. The load it carries must first be safely transferred. The contractor must install heavy-duty temporary steel props (šprajcevi) to support the ceiling slab. Only after the temporary support is fully secured can the masonry be carefully removed, starting from the top down.

### Installing the Steel Portal

Once the opening is cleared, the permanent structural reinforcement—typically a steel portal frame made of I-beams or H-beams—is installed. The structural project dictates the exact profile, steel grade, and anchoring methods. The steel must bear tightly against the existing structure to prevent future sagging or cracking in the floors above.

### Documentation and Inspection

Do not close the new steel structure behind plasterboard immediately. The structural engineer or supervising engineer must inspect the installed steelwork, verify the welding and anchoring, and sign off that it matches the statics project. Take clear photos of the completed steel frame before finishing works begin; this evidence is crucial for future sales or building inspections.
