Electrical Panel Upgrade During Apartment Renovation

Upgrading the electrical distribution board is the foundation of any safe apartment renovation. A modern panel provides the necessary physical space for dedicated appliance circuits and life-saving safety switches that old fuse boxes simply cannot support.

The Danger of Keeping the Old Fuse Box

A common mistake during apartment renovation is keeping the old electrical panel while adding modern appliances. Old panels often lack the physical space for new circuits and may not have life-saving Residual Current Devices (RCDs), leaving your home at risk of electrical fires or shocks.

Specify a Larger Distribution Board

Modern living requires more dedicated circuits for induction hobs, ovens, washing machines, and air conditioning. When chasing walls for new wiring, request a larger flush-mounted distribution board (minimum 24 to 36 modules) to neatly accommodate all current and future breakers.

Install RCD Protection for Life Safety

An RCD (Residual Current Device, or FID sklopka) is a mandatory safety upgrade that instantly cuts power if it detects an earth fault. Ensure your electrician installs appropriate RCDs, especially protecting the bathroom circuits and all accessible sockets, to meet modern safety standards.

Separate Heavy Load Circuits

Never combine heavy load appliances on a single circuit. The induction hob, oven, dishwasher, and washing machine must each have their own dedicated cable and breaker running back to the main panel. This prevents nuisance tripping and protects the wiring from overheating.

Verify the Main Incoming Cable

Before finishing the walls, the electrician must check the cross-section of the main incoming cable from the building's meter. If you are switching from gas to an electric induction hob, the existing main cable might be too thin to handle the increased total power demand of the apartment.
