Apartment Soundproofing During Renovation in Croatia

Apartment soundproofing Croatia — installation of a decoupled acoustic stud wall with mineral wool during an apartment…

Effective soundproofing in older Croatian apartment buildings requires structural decoupling, not just acoustic foam. Impact noise travels through continuous solid structures. The solution is creating a physical break—floating floors and decoupled ceilings and walls—before decorative finishes are applied.

Check 1 – Wall Decoupling

Before installing acoustic drywall, verify that the metal studs are physically separated from the existing party wall. The perimeter tracks must be mounted using acoustic isolation tape (foam or rubber). If a stud touches the bare brick or concrete, the acoustic bridge remains, rendering the insulation ineffective. Check this before the apartment renovation trades close the wall.

Check 2 – Mineral Wool Density

The cavity between the new drywall and the existing structure must be filled with mineral wool. Check that the specified wool has the correct density for acoustic absorption, not just thermal insulation. The wool should fit snugly without being overly compressed, as severe compression reduces its acoustic dampening properties.

Check 3 – Floating Floor Perimeter

When addressing impact noise from above or below, a floating floor is critical. Before pouring the screed or installing the subfloor, verify that the acoustic underlay (like EPS-T or rubber cork) turns up at the edges to isolate the screed from the surrounding walls. If the new floor touches the wall, impact noise will flank the soundproofing.

Check 4 – Electrical Backboxes

Acoustic walls are often compromised by electrical sockets. When electricians cut holes for backboxes, they create a weak point for sound. Ensure acoustic putty pads or specialized acoustic backboxes are used, and avoid placing sockets back-to-back on a shared party wall.

Check 5 – Sealing and Mass

Sound acts like water; it finds any gap. The perimeter of the acoustic drywall must be sealed with a flexible acoustic sealant, not standard rigid filler. Furthermore, using two layers of overlapping acoustic-grade drywall adds necessary mass and overlaps the seams. Confirm the double-boarding detail with your contractor.
