Preparing a new house for a future solar photovoltaic (PV) system costs very little during the structural shell phase, but saves thousands of euros in rework later. By integrating large conduits and an oversized electrical panel now, you ensure a seamless, invisible solar installation when you are ready.

The Myth of Adding Solar Later

Assuming you can easily add solar panels to a finished house is a costly mistake. Without pre-installed conduits, you will face exposed cables on your facade, complex roof penetrations, or expensive core drilling through finished walls and floors.

Route Large Conduits During the Shell Phase

While the walls are still raw, install at least two large-diameter empty conduits (minimum 50mm) connecting the roof space directly to the main electrical distribution board. These will safely house the thick DC cables and communication wires from the solar panels.

Size the Main Electrical Panel for Solar

A standard electrical panel is rarely large enough to accommodate the extra circuit breakers, smart meters, and surge protection devices required for a photovoltaic system. Specify an oversized distribution board with plenty of spare DIN rails to avoid having to install a messy secondary sub-panel later.

Plan the Inverter and Battery Location

Solar inverters and battery storage units require dedicated wall space, proper ventilation, and structural support. Decide on their exact location in a utility room or garage early on so the electrical conduits can be routed precisely to that spot.

Structural Roof Anchors and Earthing

If the roof structure is being built or replaced, coordinate with your roofer to install the solar mounting brackets or structural anchors underneath the tiles. Simultaneously, ensure the building's foundational earthing system (uzemljenje) is robust enough to safely ground the future PV array.
